Check Out the Kids' New Businesses!!!

August and September may have been our first months "back to school", but it would probably be more appropriate to call it "back to business" as most of our focus was on starting the kids new businesses! Noah saw a business opportunity at the homeschool convention in May and had been asking to get started ever since. Not to be left out, Ava wanted her own business too!

So here we are, two months into our school year, clicking along with our regular curriculum and just past the launch of both businesses - Noah's Candles, Soap and Tub Supplies and Ava's Rings and Things. Together, they form the entity Gifts for My Mom, which focuses on providing mom-friendly gift items at kid-friendly prices.

The business just officially launched last week, and here are some of the learning experiences the kids have had already:

Ava (Kindergarten, age 5)
  • Creating business name
  • Sorting products into like categories
  • Counting the items in each category
  • Putting price tags on items
  • Determining the best way to display items
  • Talking to customers about products
  • Handling money
  • Packaging products for customers
Noah (3rd Grade, age 7)
  • Creating business name, logo and mission
  • Selecting products
  • Creating charts of inventory levels
  • Photographing products for website
  • Establishing retail pricing
  • Learning how to use wholesale and retail prices to calculate profit
  • Dividing profit into categories (business, personal, charity) by percentages
  • Building and using Excel spreadsheets
  • Talking to customers about products
  • Calculating pricing for multi-product orders
  • Monthly financial reporting
  • Packaging and displaying products
  • Handling money
  • Packaging products for customers
They are beyond excited about their businesses, and I'm thrilled at all the learning opportunities they will provide. If you have a moment, check out the website and drop them a note on Facebook - they will be thrilled to hear from you!!!
